Jerry Cantrell will forever be known for his work with the band Alice in Chains. But during his solo show in Columbus, OH on February 18th, Cantrell proved there is much more to him than one band. Jerry Cantrell treated fans at the Bluestone in Columbus, OH on a journey through his amazing career. Of course, there were songs from the Alice in Chains days, but the set also highlighted songs from each of the guitarist’s four solo albums, including his latest, I Want Blood.
The true testament to the quality of Jerry Cantrell’s solo material was that the energy in the venue never wavered. Fans were as much into the new material as they were the AIC classics. There was a loyalty on display as members of the crowd decked out in their Alice in Chains shirts that they wore 30 years ago were singing along to every word of every song in the set. Old or new, it didn’t matter. The sold-out crowd loved every second of the show. And the loyalty was definitely returned from Cantrell.
I caught word shortly before the show started that Jerry was sick and feeling pretty rough. That did not stop him from taking the stage and giving the fans what they came for. Honestly, I thought the news of Jerry being sick was false after a couple of songs into the set because he sounded so great. But during the show, Cantrell shared with the crowd that he was, in fact, under the weather, but promised to carry on. And carry on he did. He and his band delivered an amazing show and showed no signs of weakness. He could have cut the show short or even canceled altogether, but instead, Jerry stepped on his guitar and gave it his all. I can promise you that everyone left the Bluestone happy campers.
It is one thing to hear Jerry Cantrell on a record and be floored by his talent. But when you see him live you are left in total awe. Some guys can play the guitar. Some guys can sing. And other guys can write great songs. Jerry Cantrell can do them all. It is a sight to behold when you see him play in concert. Whether it is with Alice in Chains, or with his stellar solo band, never miss a chance to see Jerry Cantrell live. And do yourself a favor and pick up his latest album, I Want Blood. You will not be disappointed!
