After attending concerts for the past 30 years without using protection for my ears, these words have become a daily part of most of my conversations. It certainly has to be annoying for the person I am speaking with, and I know it is embarrassing and frustrating for me. It’s also a little scary to think about what my hearing will be like a few years from now. Okay, it’s really scary.
Why Didn’t I Wear Earplugs?
Was I too cool for them? Not really. Perhaps I was a little naive. I started attending shows when I was 14 years old. At 14, you don’t think about hearing loss. And as you go to show after show, you develop habits. Sometimes they are bad habits but habits nonetheless. A habit that I developed was not wearing earplugs. Little did I know that little by little, show after show, the damage was being done. When I finally did think about my hearing and bought some foam earplugs at the venue for $2, I would take them out after the first or second song because they were so uncomfortable and blocked out the band I was trying to listen to.
How the Photo Pit Changed It All For Me?
As I started to receive opportunities to photograph concerts I found myself in the amazing position of being in the photo pits between the stage and the front row. As awesome as this is, that is also where the band’s monitors are also located blasting out the music…very loudly. After one or two shows in that situation, I knew I had to do something. For a while, it was back to the foam plugs…if I remembered them or didn’t lose them over the course of the show. But even over 30 years, the technology of these cheap foam plugs has not changed.
